《小夜曲》于1973年2月25日在百老汇舒伯特剧院推出，上演了600场，然后展开全美各地的巡回公演，后来又登上伦敦的舞台。多年以来，这出戏不断地被拿出来重新上演。《Send in the Clowns》是本剧最受欢迎的名曲。在本剧中，这首歌出现于第二幕，《Send in the clowns。小丑进场》，剧情是说：一个在舞台上颠倒众生的红伶，眼看昔日被她玩弄於股掌间的男士们，个个均安身成家，好面子的她不信自己魅力已失，遂邀请众伉俪到她的乡间别墅度假。当她向老情人提出重续前缘时被拒，于是自嘲而又伤感地唱出了这首歌，发人深省、令人动容。
