Foreigner合唱团成立于1976年的纽约，与journey, Styx为同期乐队，是支起源于70年代重摇滚并受到流行市场喜宠爱的乐队，尤其是他们的抒情摇滚曲，更成为了排行榜的常胜军、风靡世界各地，连Linkin Park（林肯公园）的主唱Chester，小时候都是听Foreigner的歌曲而立志当一名歌手。Foreigner起源于英国籍的吉他手Mick Jones，他原来是迷幻乐队Spooky Tooth的成员，1975年他来到纽约加入了几个不同的团体，最后结识了主唱Lou Gramm，于是以这位英国来的外国人身份为团名灵感，组成了Foreigner（外国人）合唱团。
Foreigner简介
1977年乐队甫一发行同名处女作便告成功，乐队成员在此之前虽然都不是太顺利，但是在乐队成立后却一帆风顺。吉他手Jones和主唱Lou Gramm的表现深得听众欢心，他们的创作方式也正中普通听众下怀，他们的音乐在硬摇滚的主线下强调动听的旋律和令人印象深刻的吉他riff，并经常进行换汤不换药的形式变换以保持音乐的新鲜感，从而在商业上取得了极大的成功，单曲专辑两头开花。之后他们频频参加一些大型主流摇滚乐队的演出，并迅速扩大了知名度。在接连推出两张成功的唱片之后，1982年，经过人事变动的乐队推出他们的镇宅之作《4》，这是商业成功作品的参照标准，精良细致，值得从业人员研究。之后乐队开始以较为沉稳的心态进行发展，在商业上保持了成功，甚至在主唱Lou Gramm离队后也是如此。
同名首作于1977年发行，便立即以"Feels Like The First 时间"、"Long, Long Way From Home"还有2人的合写曲"Cold As Ice"受到欢迎，销售大卖了500万张；1978年他们再以专辑《Double Vision》横扫千军，专辑销售超越了700万张、获得7张白金唱片认证，并诞生了代表曲"Hot Blooded"，来年又再以专辑“Head Games”单独在美国开出500万的销售红盘，祭出金曲"Dirty White Boy"。团员始终维持为6人的编制，在70年末开始有了变动，不过Mick Jones与Lou Gramm始终维系了良好的默契。进入80年代后，1981的专辑《4》成为他们的经典代表，至今也卖出了700万张，拥有了"Urgent"、"Waiting For A Girl Like You"2支超红单曲，再随着全球音乐电视台世代的开启，1984年Foreigner以"I Want To Know What Love Is"成为该年度电视与电台的最受欢迎曲。1986年，Mick Jones成为制作人、为Bad Company的《Fame And Fortune》还有Van Halen的《5150》操刀；Lou Gramm则发行个人专辑《Ready Or Not》；1987年，他俩归队完成了新作《Inside Information》，其中的"Say You Will"、"I Don’t Want To Live Without You"双双成为了畅销曲。1990年与2003年，Lou Gramm两度脱队，Foreigner从此也换了新主唱Kelly Hansen，但都仅以巡回演唱为主，而没有新作产生。
I Want to Know What Love Is：曾是“Foreigner”最成功的单曲之一，在英美两地都夺得了当年的冠军，并且在2004年，这首歌被滚石杂志评为了史上最伟大的500首歌的476位。Mariah Carey全新演绎的《I Want to Know What Love Is》是由著名制作人C. "Tricky" Stewart、Big Jim以及玛丽亚·凯莉本人重新制作。这首歌在很大程度上同原曲保持了一致，但是钢琴部分则被重新编制，换成了更为现代的风格，没有了80年代的古典气息。这首新歌于2009年8月28日在欧洲的电台首播，随即通过网络传遍了世界每个角落。Mariah Carey新专辑《Memoirs Of An Imperfect Angel》的单曲I Want to Know What Love Is，这首歌也是翻唱自摇滚乐队“Foreigner”1984年的同名经典歌曲，原作者为Mick Jones。很多人接触的版本也多是MC的版本。
