the beatles在1995年到1997年陆续发行了anthology系列双专辑，分别为anthology1、anthology2和anthology3，因为是双专辑，所以共分为六碟。
系列专辑分为三部分，分别对应了早中晚三个时期的披头士乐队。
从这套专辑中我们可以看到披头士乐队风格和创作理念的变化，大量的demo和半成品歌曲见证了披头士12张录音室专辑的形成过程，从而加深了乐迷对这支史上最伟大摇滚乐队的认识。
系列1
anthology1发行于1995年11月20日，收录了披头士1958年到1964年10月18日为发行的曲目，另外特别收录了Jhon Lenonn创作的free as a bird作为打榜单曲。
Free as a bird获得了1996年第39届格莱美奖的最佳音乐录影奖项，同时也让乐队获得年度最佳流行组合奖!
Free As A Bird
free as a bird完全由约翰·列侬创作，并在1977年录制了一个demo。1995年，列侬遗孀小野洋子将这首歌的母带交给保罗·麦卡特尼，麦卡特尼与另外两位披头士乐队成员协同制作人Jeff Lynne重新混缩了这首歌曲，并且加上了披头士其他成员的声音，使它真正成为了披头士整体创作的作品。
这首歌曲旋律鲜明，配合有Ringo的细密清晰的鼓点，副歌部分被麦卡特尼重新演绎效果非凡
这首歌的单曲碟在第一个星期卖出了120000张，在英国单曲榜取得了2的佳绩，在榜8周；Billboard Hot 100上取得了6名次，这也成为了披头士乐队在美国的第34支top10单曲，最终单曲获得了金唱片认证。
专辑销售
这张专辑在Billboard200空降为冠军，在6周内就取得了美国唱片协会的3白金销售认证，最终在美国达到了破天荒的8白金销售认证！在英国榜，专辑不敌玛丽亚·凯莉的daydream屈居亚军，但最终获得了2白金的销售认证。
专辑在销量上无疑是一个巨大的成功，在一个解散将近25年的乐队来说近乎是一个奇迹，再次证明了披头士乐队强大的生命力！

借着anthology1销售火热的东风，anthology2于1996年3月18日在全球发行。和anthology1一样，anthology2也是一张畅销的唱片。专辑收录了1965年2月16日到1968年2月6日披头士乐队录制的、未发行的作品，并且重新制作了约翰·列侬的real love作为打榜的单曲。
real love
real love完全由约翰列侬创作，列侬在1979年到1980年录制了6个take，第六个take在1988年列侬的传记电影《想象：约翰列侬的理想生活》作为开头结尾的主题音乐，但是音质较为粗糙。
1995年，保罗·麦卡特尼拿到了real love的母带，和另外两位披头士乐队成员及Jeff Lynne对其进行了重新混缩，加入了三人的声音，使它成为了beatles的整体作品。
这首歌在英国榜和美国榜分别拿下了#4和#11，虽然成绩逊色于free as a bird，但依然是一首极为优秀的作品，最终获得了金唱片的销量认证。

在美国，专辑迅速成为了#1，一周后滑落至#2，在top10内待了4周，Billboard 200总共坚持了22周，出榜后有两次重新回榜，并且在圣诞节期间仍然保持在了#96的位子上，最终在美国取得了4白金的销量认证；在英国，专辑总共在榜37周，这个成绩要好于anthology1，在英国榜取得了冠军，披头士乐队再一次在自己的家乡取得了胜利！
